How to compare two painting quotes
Most bad hiring decisions in Mississauga happen at the comparison stage, not on the ladder. Three rules make quotes comparable:
- Same unit. A per-square-foot rate on floor area can be checked with a tape measure; a lump sum cannot. If one quote is per square foot and the other is a round number, ask the second painter for the breakdown.
- Same scope. “Paint the main floor” means nothing. A Colour Change, or a Complete room with ceilings, trim and doors? How many doors does the allowance cover, and what does an extra one cost? Is the stipple ceiling in or out? Two quotes that answer those questions differently are quotes for two different jobs.

What Mississauga houses ask of a painter
Most of the city went up between the 1980s and the early 2000s, and three features of those houses decide how a repaint should be planned. The stippled ceilings in nearly every room take a thick-nap roller, their own product and their own pass — a painter who quotes them as ordinary ceilings will either lose money or cut corners. The two-storey foyers in Meadowvale, Erin Mills and Churchill Meadows are platform work, not ladder work, and belong as a visible line in the quote. And the original oil-painted trim from the 1990s will shed a fresh coat of paint within a year unless it is scuff-sanded and bonding-primed first — the most common failure we are called to fix behind another crew. Red flags
- Under $2 per square foot. In Southern Ontario that number only works by skipping prep, the second coat or the paint quality.
- Cash price, no paperwork. No invoice means no warranty, no insurance claim and no recourse.
- No insurance certificate. If it cannot be emailed to you this week, it does not exist.
- A verbal number that keeps moving. The quote you compare should be the quote you sign.
- No questions about your house. A painter who does not ask about stipple, foyers or oil trim has not priced a Mississauga house before.
Getting an accurate number fast
You can shortcut a week of phone tag with one prepared message. Measure the floor area of each room you want painted and note the ceiling heights; count the doors and closet doors, because they are priced per piece; photograph each room, plus close-ups of anything that needs fixing first — cracks, peeling trim, water stains. Say whether the ceilings are being painted and whether any of them are stippled, whether the house will be occupied during the work, and any dark or bold colours you have in mind, since those need an extra coat.
