Kawartha Lakes
Interior Painting

Lindsay's in-town streets, the lock villages of Fenelon Falls and Bobcaygeon, and the cottages ringing Sturgeon, Cameron and Balsam Lakes — including the ones getting insulated, drywalled and repainted for year-round living instead of just July and August. Per-square-foot pricing, a real written warranty, and a schedule that plans around lake-country access. Town house or lake cottage, Kawartha Lakes walls start at $2.65 a square foot of floor area; minimum project $650, before HST.

HST comes on top of these prices, walkthroughs cost nothing, and our window work covers wooden windows only.

These figures move with what's actually on the walls — a lakefront room with old varnish and water staining takes longer to prep than the same square footage in a five-year-old Lindsay build. A free walkthrough turns the range into one fixed number, in writing, before anything is booked. Full tier details are on our main interior painting page.

Kawartha Lakes interior painting from IntraBuild covers a municipality that's really two things at once. There's Lindsay, the working main street and administrative centre where most of the year-round population lives in fairly ordinary subdivisions and older in-town homes. And there's everything around it — Fenelon Falls, Bobcaygeon, Coboconk and the shorelines of Sturgeon, Cameron, Balsam, Pigeon and Four Mile Lakes, where a growing share of what used to be a closed-up-for-winter cottage is being turned into a house someone actually lives in past Thanksgiving. Both are painted to the same standard at the same rate, and the full scope of what we do is on our interior painting page; this one is the Kawartha Lakes version.

Kawartha Lakes has only existed as one municipality since 2001, when Victoria County's townships and the town of Lindsay amalgamated — the old boundaries barely matter now except to explain why a farmhouse near Woodville and a lakefront place outside Norland share the same mailing address. What matters more on the day we show up is which kind of building we're walking into: a cottage getting its pine board walls sealed and its shell insulated for a first real winter, or a Lindsay bungalow getting a plain, honest repaint.

02
— where we paint in Kawartha Lakes

Lindsay streets. Lock towns. Lake shores.

one municipality, three different kinds of house
Lindsay
The municipality's only real town — century homes near the downtown core, post-war streets further out, and newer subdivisions on the edges. Where most of the year-round population actually lives.
The lock towns & lake villages
Fenelon Falls and Bobcaygeon on the Trent-Severn locks, Coboconk at the top of Balsam Lake, Norland and Kirkfield further out — where cottage rows meet a walkable main street.
Farm concessions & small mains
Omemee, Woodville and Little Britain — farmhouses on the concession roads and modest village homes, well inland of any shoreline.

A Lindsay bungalow with drywall and forced-air heat gets a straightforward two-coat job. A cottage on Cameron Lake that's spent forty winters as a summer place, with pine board walls and no vapour barrier behind them, gets a different conversation before any paint opens. We quote what's actually on the wall in front of us — not a flat rural rate applied to every address in the municipality.

03
— surfaces we handle in Kawartha Lakes homes

Pine walls. Vaulted ceilings. Plain drywall.

the cottage and the house next door rarely match

Knotty pine & tongue-and-groove

Common in older Kawarthas cottages — it needs a stain-blocking primer before colour goes on, or the old tannins bleed through and yellow again within a season. We build that step into the quote instead of skipping it.

Cathedral ceilings & great rooms

Open, sloped ceilings over the main living space in most lakefront cottages and plenty of newer builds too — extra rigging and no shortcuts on the cutting-in along the ridge line.

Three-season rooms & bunkies going year-round

Where a screened porch or sleeping cabin is being closed in for four-season use, we paint after the drywall and vapour barrier are actually finished — not before, and not as an afterthought to speed things up.

Lindsay & village homes

Ordinary drywall, trim and ceilings in town and in Omemee, Woodville and Little Britain — the more conventional half of what this page covers, painted with the same care.

Painting in Kawartha Lakes: what's different here

The defining project in Kawartha Lakes right now is the cottage that stopped being a cottage. Across the lakes — Sturgeon, Balsam, Cameron, Pigeon — seasonal buildings are being converted into year-round homes, and the interior repaint is usually the last act of that winterization: new insulation and heating first, then walls that finally live at a stable temperature get their first proper finish. Painting a converted cottage is different from freshening a seasonal one. Surfaces that spent decades swinging between summer humidity and freezing vacancy carry the history — tongue-and-groove ceilings darkened by age, knots bleeding through old whites, hairline movement cracks at every joint — and the right sequence is stabilization first: seal the wood, tape the cracks, prime the stains, and only then choose the colour the lake light deserves.

Lindsay anchors the other half of the work. It is a classic Ontario service town — century homes on the older streets with plaster and generous trim, post-war blocks, and newer subdivisions filling the edges — and it paints like a small city rather than a resort area. Around it, the concession grid carries the farmhouse stock that predates the cottage economy entirely: big practical houses where the kitchen is the most-used room in the township and gets repainted twice as often as anywhere else.

The rhythm of the area is seasonal even for us. Waterfront work clusters into the warm half of the year when buildings are open and dry; town and farm interiors fill the winter, when a heated house is the best painting environment there is. Every job, lake or land, is planned as consecutive full days with materials complete on arrival, and it starts from the same transparent price structure and a written quote that lists every room and surface — the paperwork that lets an owner three lakes away book with confidence.

04
— turning a cottage into a home

Not just a summer place anymore.

a real, ongoing shift across the Kawarthas

Opening up after winter

A cottage closed since Thanksgiving often shows condensation staining behind the pine panelling or a faint mustiness in the great room. We check what caused it before we put a brush anywhere near it.

Painting after the insulation goes in

Converting a cottage or bunkie to four-season use usually means drywall and vapour barrier work first. We schedule around that trade and paint once the walls are actually ready — not before, to avoid trapping moisture behind the coat.

Ready before the lake fills back up

Retirees moving up full-time and families who want the place presentable before the Victoria Day crowd arrives are both working toward a fixed date. We build the painting schedule around whichever one applies.

Finishes built for real traffic

A cottage that sees more people through the door in a season than an average house needs a coat that scrubs clean without flashing or burnishing — we spec for that at Premium.

05
— how a Kawartha Lakes job runs

One process, five steps.

cottage or town house, the order holds

Every job starts the same way: a walkthrough, and a measured price in writing. Prep follows — furniture covered, surfaces patched and sanded, older pine cleaned and de-glossed where it needs it. On a cottage conversion, we confirm the insulation and drywall are actually finished, and give the space time to dry out, before any caulking or priming starts. Premium jobs get a tinted primer; two full coats go on next, area by area; and we finish with a walkthrough beside you and a real cleanup — swept floors, not just gathered drop sheets. The longer version lives on our interior painting service page.

— what callers ask us

Kawartha Lakes painting FAQ.

straight answers below
tap any question to open it

Do you paint cottages that only get used part of the year?

Regularly — a good share of our Kawartha Lakes work is exactly that. We plan around when a cottage is opened or closed for the season, and we're comfortable working from a key or a caretaker's instructions if you're not up from the city that week.

Can you paint over knotty pine or tongue-and-groove walls?

Yes, with the right prep. Bare or lightly finished pine needs a stain-blocking primer first, or the tannins bleed through and the colour yellows within a season. That step is built into the quote rather than left out to save time.

We're converting a three-season room or bunkie — when do you come in?

After the insulation, vapour barrier and drywall are done, and after the space has had a few days to dry out. Painting fresh drywall too early traps moisture behind the coat and tends to show up later as bubbling or peeling.

Does a private or seasonal road change anything?

It can change the timeline more than the price — some lake roads aren't maintained through the shoulder seasons. Tell us about access when you book and we build it into the schedule, rather than finding out about it on the day.

What if the cottage smells musty or has water staining after winter?

We check for the cause before painting over it. A faint musty smell after months closed up is common and usually just needs airing out; visible staining or soft drywall gets flagged, and in some cases we'll suggest a moisture check before we paint rather than sealing a problem in.

Do you cover Lindsay, or just the lake villages?

Both, at the same per-square-foot rate. Lindsay is actually where a good share of our Kawartha Lakes work happens — it's the municipality's only real town, and most of what we do there is ordinary drywall, trim and ceilings.

Which paint brands do you use, and does that change for a cottage?

Refresh uses a contractor-grade line — Benjamin Moore Ultra Spec 500, Sherwin-Williams ProMar 200 or Sico Pro. Standard steps up to a mid-grade line — Benjamin Moore ben, Sherwin-Williams SuperPaint or Dulux Diamond. Premium is the same mid-grade line with heavier prep; a premium line (Benjamin Moore Aura, Sherwin-Williams Emerald) is available as a priced upgrade. Where a ceiling is painted, it gets proper ceiling paint, not wall paint. For pine or previously varnished surfaces we add a stain-blocking primer underneath any of those lines — the topcoat itself doesn't change.

How do I get a quote for a cottage versus a house in Lindsay?

The same way either time — click "Get a Free Quote," call, or send photos by email. For a cottage, let us know roughly when you can meet us there or who holds a key; we'll build the visit around that and send a written price within 48 hours regardless.

We winterized the cottage. When should the interior be painted?

After the building has run through at least a few weeks of heated, stable conditions — the wood and drywall finish their movement as they dry to indoor levels, and cracks that were going to open do it before the painter arrives rather than after. Paint too soon after conversion and the first winter redraws the joints.

Can darkened tongue-and-groove ceilings be painted white?

Yes, with the full sequence: cleaning, a scuff sand, a shellac-based stain-blocking primer over every board and knot, then two finish coats. The primer is not optional — aged wood and knots bleed amber through anything less, and a freckled white ceiling is the classic shortcut result.

Do you work on the far lakes, or just around Lindsay?

Anywhere in the city of Kawartha Lakes, priced from the same written quote — no distance surcharge appears on the invoice. Remote water access is the one thing to flag early: if materials arrive by boat or a long private lane, we plan the trips accordingly.
